Am I A Candidate for Dental Implants?

Requirements for Dental Implants

There are many exceptional benefits to getting dental implants, but not every patient is an ideal candidate right away for this amazing procedure. To help their patients determine if dental implants are right for them, Dr. Currie and the staff at Atlanta Dental Spa compiled this list of basic information on dental implant candidacy, less ideal patients, and a few other important issues regarding dental implants.

What Makes a Dental Implant Candidate?

Here at Atlanta Dental Spa, it is our practice to examine each patient before we can determine whether or not they are a good candidate for dental implants. However, Dr. Currie prefers to place dental implants in patients with the following traits:

  • Healthy teeth and gums
  • Overall good health
  • Adequate jawbone density to support the dental implant
  • Good oral hygiene
  • Willingness to follow Dr. Currie’s instructions before and after the dental implants installation procedure

What Makes a Less Ideal Dental Implant Candidate?

The following types of patients are less preferred for dental implant placement:

  • Patients with uncontrolled gum disease
  • Women who are pregnant
  • Patients who smoke
  • Patients with uncontrolled diabetes
  • Patients with uncontrolled immune system diseases or disorders
  • Children with undeveloped jawbones

What About Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a common problem that many of our patients experience. Unfortunately, this condition can also impact dental implant candidacy.  Untreated gum disease can prevent proper healing and stability of dental implants.  Consequently, patients that have been diagnosed with gum disease will need to be effectively treated prior to initiating the dental implant process. Once they have successfully treated gum disease, patients can be re-evaluated for dental implant eligibility.

How Can Bone Grafting Treatment Help?

Having adequate jawbone structure to properly support the dental implants is one of the most important qualifications for dental implant placement. If you lack proper volume in your jawbone, dental implants may not heal properly or become strong. For these patients, bone grafting can restore healthy bone density in the jaw and better prepare the area for stable dental implant placement. This simple procedure is often performed in your doctor’s office with donated bone. Once the bone grafting area is healed, Dr. Currie can re-evaluate you for dental implants eligibility.
