You may know what this amazing option can do for your smile, but here is some additional information about the history of this modern day marvel.

Dental implants are often thought of as a modern day marvels made possible by the wonders of today’s advanced technology. However, dental implants have been used to replace missing teeth for thousands of years. In ancient times, early Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Asian dentists used precious metals, bone, shell and other hard materials to replace teeth with varying degrees of success. These ancient dental procedures provided varying levels of functionality, but researchers are now discovering that their materials and methods were not very different from our more current ones.

The first discovered functional dental implant can be attributed to the Mayans in 600 AD. In the 1930’s, researchers in Honduras found a Mayan woman’s lower jawbone while digging for archeological evidence. The bone was well-preserved and contained three tooth-shaped seashells that replaced the girl’s teeth. At first, researchers thought that the shell pieces were placed after the girl had died. However, they later determined that bone tissues had grown around the seashells while the girl was living, making the replacement teeth functional as well as ascetic.

Dental Implant Development In Modern Times

Tooth replacement studies are generally thought to have started with Swedish orthopedic surgeon Per-Ingvar Brånemark in the 1960’s. The Swedish researcher was studying bone healing by placing titanium pieces in rabbit ears. During this process, he found that the bone tissues of the rabbits naturally fused to the titanium in a process he dubbed osseointegration.

Over the course of the next decade, Brånemark conducted many more experiments and published important studies about how titanium could help patients needing functional and permanent replacement teeth. Eventually, Brånemark went on to create the commercially sold dental implants as we know them today. So if you are considering this wonderful means of replacing teeth, thank Mr. Brånemark for all his diligent research!
